Not every woman who has been a mother needs a Mommy Makeover. And among those who do, each one requires a different surgical plan. The key lies in the medical evaluation: determining exactly what changes pregnancy produced, which can be corrected, and which combination of procedures is indicated for each case.

This guide will help you determine whether you meet the requirements before scheduling your consultation.

The 6 requirements to be a Mommy Makeover candidate

Requisitos para candidacy Mommy Makeover

1. Completed family planning

This is the most important requirement. The Mommy Makeover is recommended when you are not planning any more pregnancies.

A subsequent pregnancy is not dangerous, but it can reverse the results of each procedure. The tummy tuck repairs abdominal diastasis — a new pregnancy would separate those same muscles again. Breast surgery restores shape and volume that breastfeeding can modify once more. And liposculpture eliminates fat deposits that the hormonal changes of pregnancy tend to regenerate.

If you are still unsure about more children, discuss it with your surgeon. In some cases, partial procedures can be performed that are complemented later, prioritizing those least affected by a future pregnancy.

2. Stable weight for at least 6 months

You don’t need to be at your “ideal weight” for a Mommy Makeover, but you do need to be at a weight you can maintain long-term. Fluctuations over 5 kg directly affect the results of the tummy tuck and liposculpture: the skin that was removed does not grow back, but the remaining skin can stretch with weight gain.

3. Minimum 6 months after delivery or breastfeeding

The body needs time after pregnancy. Hormones must normalize, skin needs to recover some of its natural elasticity, the uterus and abdominal organs must return to their position, and fluid retention must resolve completely.

Operating before 6 months means working on a body that is still changing, which compromises the precision of the surgical plan and the predictability of results.

4. Good general health

The pre-surgical evaluation verifies that your health allows for a safe surgery. Some conditions do not contraindicate surgery but require prior control.

Conditions that need prior stabilization

Diabetes must be controlled with a glycated hemoglobin below 7% — higher levels compromise healing and increase the risk of infection. Hypertension needs to be under treatment with stable numbers. Hypothyroidism requires adjusted medication and normal hormone levels. And anemia must be corrected before surgery that involves some blood loss.

Conditions that may contraindicate surgery

Uncontrolled coagulation disorders, active autoimmune diseases, unassessed severe cardiac conditions, and morbid obesity (BMI above 40) represent relative or absolute contraindications. In these cases, the surgeon may postpone the procedure until the condition resolves or stabilizes, or refer to a specialist for prior optimization.

5. Non-smoker — or stop at least 4 weeks before

Smoking is one of the most important and preventable risk factors in plastic surgery. Nicotine constricts blood vessels and reduces blood flow to tissues. In a tummy tuck, where an extensive skin flap is elevated, this reduction in blood supply can cause flap necrosis (tissue death), dehiscence (wound opening), and poor healing with wider, more visible scars.

The risk of complications in smokers is double that in non-smokers. Stopping tobacco — cigarettes, vape, pipe, any form of nicotine — is not an optional recommendation but a surgical requirement. Minimum 4 weeks before and 4 weeks after surgery.

6. Realistic expectations about results

The consultation is the time to align what you expect with what surgery can achieve. A Mommy Makeover transforms the body significantly, but it does not produce “perfect” results or return the pre-pregnancy body.

What you can expect: a flat, firm abdomen with a low scar hidden under underwear, breasts with restored shape and projection, and improved body contour without the fat deposits that exercise could not eliminate. The improvement in confidence and relationship with your body is consistent among the vast majority of patients.

What you should not expect: complete disappearance of stretch marks (only those in the excess skin that is removed), significant weight loss (a Mommy Makeover is not a bariatric procedure), or completely scar-free results. Scars are the inevitable price of transformation — but a good surgeon plans them to be as discreet as possible.

Complete Mommy Makeover or an individual procedure?

Not every mother needs the full combination. Some changes are resolved with a single procedure, and over-operating makes no sense.

If the main problem is excess skin in the abdomen and diastasis but the breasts are fine and there is no significant localized fat, only the tummy tuck may be sufficient. If the breasts lost volume or sagged but the abdomen recovered acceptably, only breast surgery resolves the situation. And if there is no excess skin or diastasis but there are localized fat deposits that do not respond to exercise, only liposculpture — or even a non-surgical procedure like BodyTite — may be sufficient.

The complete Mommy Makeover makes sense when there are simultaneous changes in the abdomen, breasts, and body contour, as occurs in most women after 2 or more pregnancies. The only way to determine what you need is an in-person medical evaluation with a certified plastic surgeon.

Age and Mommy Makeover: is there an ideal range?

There is no minimum or maximum age for the Mommy Makeover. What matters is health status and meeting the requirements above. In practice, most of our patients fall into three age groups.

Patients 28 to 35 years old typically arrive after 1–2 pregnancies. They have good skin elasticity and fast recovery. Their surgical plans tend to be less extensive because the accumulated damage is less.

Between 36 and 45 years old we find women who have completed their family and have been postponing the decision for years. They may require more extensive procedures because loss of skin elasticity compounds the pregnancy changes.

Patients 46 to 55 years old present pregnancy changes compounded by those of aging. They are excellent candidates if they enjoy good health, and results tend to be the most transformative because the starting point is more complex.

The pre-surgical evaluation: what to expect at your first consultation

The Mommy Makeover consultation at ALMO Clinic is a structured process that takes between 45 and 60 minutes. It is not a rushed appointment.

Complete medical history

Your surgeon needs to know your previous pregnancies (number, type of delivery, duration of breastfeeding), past and current illnesses, medications you take, allergies, and previous surgeries. This information determines not only whether you are a candidate but what special precautions are needed.

Detailed physical examination

Abdominal diastasis (muscle separation), the quality and quantity of excess skin, the state of the breasts (volume, degree of ptosis, symmetry), the distribution of body fat, and skin quality and previous scarring are all evaluated. This examination defines which procedures you need and which you do not.

Clinical photographs and surgical plan

Standardized photographic documentation is taken for surgical planning and result follow-up. With all the gathered information, your surgeon explains exactly which procedures they recommend, why they recommend them, and what results you can expect from each.

Detailed budget

You receive a budget with all included concepts: surgeon’s fees, operating room, anesthesia, supplies, implants (if applicable), garments, and post-operative checkups. No surprises later.

Frequently asked questions about Mommy Makeover candidates

Can I have a Mommy Makeover after a C-section?

Yes. The C-section scar is generally incorporated into or replaced by the tummy tuck scar, which is located in a similar but lower position. In many cases, the C-section scar disappears completely within the skin that is removed.

What if I had more than 3 pregnancies?

Multiple pregnancies are not a contraindication. In fact, women with 3 or more pregnancies are often excellent candidates because the accumulated changes are more significant and the Mommy Makeover results, more noticeable.

Does being overweight prevent me from having a Mommy Makeover?

A BMI between 25 and 30 (mild overweight) does not contraindicate surgery, but the surgeon adjusts the plan. With a BMI above 35, surgical risks increase significantly and weight loss is generally recommended before the procedure. An individualized evaluation determines whether it is safe to proceed.

How much time off work do I need?

Most patients need 2–3 weeks of work leave for sedentary work and 4–6 weeks for physical work. Plan ahead, especially childcare during the first 2 weeks — that is the period when you will need the most help.

Do I need help at home after surgery?

Yes, it is essential to have help the first 7–10 days, especially if you have young children. You will not be able to lift weight, bend down, or exert abdominal effort during the first weeks. Organizing this logistics in advance is as important as medical preparation.
