In summary

Thigh lift recovery means 7 to 10 days of rest at home, gentle walking from the first days, no spreading of the legs in the first weeks to protect the groin scar, and leg workouts from weeks 6 to 8 with your surgeon's approval. Scars keep maturing through the first year. If you travel for surgery, your surgeon sets the date you can fly at your post-op check-up.

If you are planning a thigh lift, recovery is probably the part you are trying to picture: how much rest you need, when you can walk and sit normally, what the scars will look like and, if you are flying to Colombia for surgery, how long to stay. Below is a realistic timeline. The exact dates are set by your surgeon, so take the ranges as a guide, not a promise.

How long is thigh lift recovery?

The short answer: about 7 to 10 days of rest at home, a few weeks of gradually returning to normal activity, and 6 to 8 weeks before leg workouts. The scars keep improving for many months. Thigh lift recovery is a little more demanding than many other body procedures because the incision sits in the groin, an area that moves every time you walk or sit.

Recovery also depends on the type of thigh lift, whether it was combined with liposuction or other procedures, and on your general health.

Thigh lift recovery week by week

Days 1–7

The first days are about rest and protection of the incisions. You will feel tightness and discomfort in the groin and inner thighs, managed with the medication your surgeon prescribes. Short, gentle walks around the house are encouraged from the start because they help circulation. Avoid spreading your legs and keep the groin incision clean and dry, following your surgeon’s instructions.

Weeks 2–3

Discomfort and swelling usually improve noticeably. You can walk more and do light daily activities, but you still avoid positions that stretch the groin incision. If your surgeon recommends it, this is when post-op lymphatic drainage can help with swelling. Your first check-ups take place during this period.

Weeks 4–6

Most patients move much more freely. Walking feels normal again, though the inner thighs may still feel tight or swollen at the end of the day. Exercise that works the legs is still off the table.

Months 3–12: scars and final result

Swelling keeps going down and the contour settles. From weeks 6 to 8, with your surgeon’s approval, you can return to leg workouts such as squats and running. The scars change slowly over the first year, from pink and firm to flatter and paler.

How to sit, sleep and walk after a thigh lift

  • Walking: start with short walks from the first days and increase gradually. Avoid long strides in the first weeks.
  • Sitting: sit for short periods with your knees together, on a chair that is not too low, and get up regularly. Avoid sitting cross-legged.
  • Sleeping: sleep on your back with your legs together and slightly raised if your surgeon recommends it.
  • Hygiene: the groin crease is a moist area, so keeping the incision clean and dry is a key part of thighplasty recovery.

Compression garments and lymphatic massage

Your surgeon will tell you whether to wear a compression garment, which type and for how long. Its job is to support the tissues and control swelling while you heal.

Lymphatic massage can help with swelling in the weeks after surgery, but it should only start when your surgeon allows it and be done by a therapist trained in post-op care. At ALMO Clinic we offer post-op lymphatic drainage massage that can be scheduled during your stay. For how many sessions and when to start, the same principles we explain in our guide to lymphatic massage after lipo apply.

When can you fly after a thigh lift?

This is the question every patient traveling for surgery asks, and the honest answer is that your surgeon sets the date at your post-op check-up, based on how you are healing. That is why it is worth planning ahead:

  • Plan for at least the 7 to 10 days of rest at home, plus time for your check-up.
  • Book a flexible return ticket so you can adjust it if your surgeon asks you to stay longer.
  • On the flight, walk the aisle, stay hydrated and follow your surgeon’s instructions to lower the risk of blood clots.
  • Before you leave, agree on how follow-up will continue from home, in person or virtually.

Scars after one year: what is normal

Thigh lift scars sit in the groin crease and, in larger cases, along the inner thigh. During the first months they are usually pink or red and may feel firm or raised. Over the first year or so they gradually become flatter and paler. Because the inner thigh moves constantly, some scars widen, and they always remain visible to some degree.

See your surgeon if a scar becomes increasingly raised, thick or itchy, or if any part of it opens. For more on who is a good candidate and how the scar is planned, see our page on thigh lift in Colombia.
