ASIA Syndrome: Navigating Between Concern and Evidence
Autoimmune/Inflammatory Syndrome Induced by Adjuvants (ASIA) has moved from an unknown medical term to a daily conversation on social media. This has brought valuable information but also dangerous myths that can confuse patients.
At ALMO Clinic, we approach implant removal with a scientific foundation, respecting the patient’s wishes while providing medical clarity.

5 Common Myths About ASIA Syndrome
Myth 1: “Every woman with implants will develop ASIA”
False. ASIA is an immune response that depends on each person’s genetic predisposition. Most women with implants do not present systemic symptoms. It is a real condition, but not universal.
Myth 2: “Any headache or fatigue is because of my implants”
False. Diagnosis by exclusion is fundamental. Before attributing a symptom to an implant, it is vital to rule out vitamin deficiencies, thyroid problems, or pre-existing autoimmune diseases.
Myth 3: “Simple explantation cures ASIA”
False. For recovery to be effective in cases of inflammation, it is crucial to remove not only the implant but also its capsule (the internal scar the body formed around it). Leaving the capsule behind may leave adjuvant residues in the body.
Myth 4: “ASIA is a social media invention”
False. Although not all doctors accept it with the same criteria, there are published diagnostic criteria (Shoenfeld et al.) that associate exposure to adjuvants (like silicone) with immune symptoms.
Myth 5: “My breasts will look terrible after explantation”
False. With modern mastopexy and fat grafting techniques, it is possible to achieve a very decent, natural, and harmonious aesthetic result.
The Importance of Total En Bloc Capsulectomy
If the decision to explant is based on suspected ASIA or Breast Implant Illness (BII), the En Bloc technique is the gold standard. It consists of removing the implant inside its intact capsule, like a “bag.”
This prevents any microscopic silicone residue or bacterial biofilm from coming into contact with your healthy tissue during surgery. Not all surgeons have the expertise to perform this meticulous dissection without damaging the breast tissue.

What to Expect for Your Health After Explantation?
Many patients report improvements in “brain fog,” chronic fatigue, and muscle pain even days after surgery. However, remember that the body can take 6 to 12 months to fully regulate its immune system.
If you feel your implants are affecting your well-being, do not ignore your symptoms. Schedule an evaluation at ALMO Clinic to speak with an expert.
